The EventSentry Dashboard Widget allows you to view the same performance gauges which are available in the dashboard on your desktop, without having to open a web page. The widget shows you the same information as the dashboard, with the exception of System Information which is not shown in the widget to conserve space.
The dashboard widget comes in two variations, the
Stand-Alone Version The stand-alone version of the widget runs on any Windows machine, and unlike other widget technologies, does not require a widget engine to be present on the computer. You can simply launch the widget and it will be present on your desktop. The stand-alone widgets are available in the Widgets sub folder where you installed EventSentry and contain the string "StandAlone".
DesktopX Version The DesktopX version of the widget requires you to have DesktopX installed on your computer in order to use the widget. DesktopX is free and can be downloaded from http://www.stardock.com/products/desktopx/downloads.asp. We recommend using DesktopX if you plan on using more than a couple of widgets at a time, and/or if you would like to use other widgets provided by the DesktopX community as well. The DesktopX widgets are available in the Widgets sub folder where you installed EventSentry.
Configuring the Widget To configure the widget, simply launch the EventSentry Dashboard Widget 1.exe (or EventSentry Dashboard Widget StandAlone 1.exe) which will show you the initial help screen of the widget:
Now, right-click the little circle on the lower right corner of the widget and select "Properties", which will show you the configuration screen of the widget:
Preferences Tab: URL, Profile, Computer Specify the path to the web reports (URL), the profile (Profile) and the computer to be displayed (Computer) in the widget properties.
Appearance Tab: Accessibility Taskbar: If you set this option to Taskbar, the widget will show up in your task bar just like other open applications. We do not recommend this option. Systray: If you set this option to Systray, the widget will appear in the systray and you can show/hide the widget anytime by clicking the icon in the systray. We recommend this option when you are displaying one or two widgets at the same time. None: If you set this option to None, the widget will only appear on your desktop, and you will have to view your desktop or press F10 to see the widget. We recommend this option when you are viewing 2 or more widgets.
Run automatically when Windows starts This option should be called "when I login", and we recommend setting this option if you want the widget to automatically appear every time you login.
Any options you set for the widgets will be saved automatically by DesktopX and will be restored when you re-open the widget. A correctly configured widget should like similar to this:
Viewing more than one Widget at a time You can view up to eight (8) EventSentry Dashboard Widgets at the same time, however you will have to launch different .exe files. The Widget sub folder contains eight .exe files for both the DesktopX and the Stand-Alone version. For example, to see the status of three servers on your desktop, launch the following files:
Launching a different EXE is necessary so that your preferences are saved and restored correctly for each widget after you reboot your computer.
Moving the Widget You can easily move the widget to a different position on the screen by dragging it on the circle on the bottom-right corner, or by dragging it anywhere on the frame surrounding the dashboard. |
